Vayots Dzor Region

Areni-1 Cave is one of Armenia’s most important archaeological sites, where discoveries dating back thousands of years reveal the advanced life of prehistoric communities. The cave is especially famous for the world’s oldest known winery, dating to around 4000 BC, as well as the oldest known leather shoe.

Noravank Monastery is a stunning 13th-century monastery set among the dramatic red cliffs of the Amaghu Gorge. Built by renowned medieval architect Momik, it is especially known for its intricate stone carvings, including the remarkable depiction of God the Father on the façade of the Surb Astvatsatsin Church.

Yeghegis village is a historic village nestled in the mountains of Vayots Dzor, once an important medieval settlement of the region. Its surroundings preserve remarkable churches, chapels and the Jewish cemetery, offering a glimpse into the diverse history of medieval Armenia.

Orbelian’s Caravanserai is a beautifully preserved 14th century caravanserai on the historic Silk Road route through Armenia. Built in 1332 by Prince Chesar Orbelian, it offered shelter to merchants and their caravans crossing the difficult Selim Pass between Armenia and the regions to the south.

Jermuk is a mountain spa town known for its mineral-rich waters, fresh air and dramatic natural surroundings. Surrounded by forests and deep gorges, the town has long been a destination for wellness and relaxation, while its famous mineral water is naturally warm and rich in minerals. The nearby Jermuk Waterfall adds to the beauty of this peaceful mountain retreat.

Smbataberd Fortress is a remarkable medieval fortress stretching along a mountain ridge above the Yeghegis Valley. Built as a strategic stronghold of the Orbelian dynasty, its massive walls and towers offer spectacular views over the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Tsakhats Kar Monastery is a secluded medieval monastery complex perched high in the mountains above the Yeghegis Valley. Dating mainly to the 10th–11th centuries, it is known for its distinctive stone architecture and remote setting, offering a peaceful glimpse into the monastic heritage of Vayots Dzor.

Mount Vayots Sar is a striking volcanic peak rising above the landscapes of Vayots Dzor. Its distinctive conical shape and rugged surroundings make it a memorable landmark of the region, especially beautiful when viewed from the vineyards and valleys below.

Gndevank Monastery is a 10th century monastery nestled in the narrow Arpa Gorge. Founded by Princess Sophia, it is known for its elegant medieval architecture and peaceful setting. It is also one of the rare places in Armenia where visitors may have the chance to meet a monk who still lives at the monastery.
