Aragatsotn Region

Saghmosavank Monastery is a 13th-century monastery perched above the Kasagh Gorge. Its name means “Monastery of Psalms” and it is traditionally associated with the singing of spiritual hymns and psalms, making it unique among Armenia’s monasteries.

Amberd Fortress is a medieval fortress complex built high on the slopes of Mount Aragats, at the meeting point of the Amberd and Arkashen rivers. The site was already fortified in the 7th century, while the present fortress and its church were developed and expanded during the 10th–13th centuries. Its massive walls, towers and dramatic mountain setting reflect Amberd’s importance as one of medieval Armenia’s major strongholds.

Hovhannavank Monastery is a historic monastery perched above the Kasagh Gorge, with origins dating back to the 4th century. The complex was expanded over the centuries and is known for its elegant medieval architecture, intricate stone carvings and the largest rotunda of its kind in Armenia, built beside the church.

Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory was founded in 1946 by Viktor Hambardzumyan, one of the most influential astrophysicists of the 20th century. His research on stellar associations and star formation provided evidence that new stars are still forming in the universe today, challenging the idea that star formation was only a phenomenon of the distant past. His work also transformed our understanding of how stars and galaxies evolve, making Byurakan an important center of international astrophysical research.

Mount Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia, rising to 4,090 meters above sea level. An extinct volcanic massif with four distinct peaks surrounding a vast crater, Aragats offers spectacular hiking landscapes, alpine meadows and panoramic views across Armenia.

Heruni Radio-Optical Telescope, also known as the Herouni Mirror Radio Telescope, is a remarkable Soviet-era scientific installation built in the 1970s by Armenian engineer and scientist Paris Herouni. Located near Orgov, it was one of the world’s largest radio-optical telescopes, designed to observe and study radio sources in space while also supporting radar and astronomical research.



Tegher Monastery (Dgher)
is a 13th-century monastery built on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats, overlooking the surrounding valleys. Constructed from dark volcanic stone, the monastery is known for its austere architecture and peaceful mountain setting, with beautiful views across the Aragatsotn landscape.

Lake Rapi is a beautiful high-altitude lake on the slopes of Mount Aragats, surrounded by alpine meadows and volcanic landscapes. Reaching the lake requires a hike, making it a rewarding destination for those looking to experience the quieter, wilder side of Aragats.

Karmravor Church is a charming 7th-century church in the town of Ashtarak, known for its simple red-tuff architecture and well-preserved structure. Dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, it is one of the best-preserved early medieval churches in Armenia and is closely connected with local legends and traditions.


Aparan Reservoir is a scenic mountain reservoir surrounded by the slopes of Mount Aragats. Its calm waters and open landscapes make it a peaceful stop, especially beautiful in spring and summer when the surrounding hills turn green.

Agarak Archaeological Site is an ancient archaeological complex dating back thousands of years, located on a rocky volcanic plateau near Mount Aragats. Carved directly into the natural rock, the site contains ritual spaces, tombs, dwellings and other structures. It is considered one of the oldest known sacred landscapes in Armenia, offering a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs and rituals of ancient communities.

Myler Mountain Resort is a mountain resort set in the landscapes of Aragatsotn, designed for year-round outdoor experiences. It offers opportunities for skiing and snow activities in winter, while the warmer months are suited to hiking, nature and mountain recreation.
